We approach another Holocaust Remembrance Day and many, particularly those born after 1945 are questioning why it is still necessary; why keep the memory alive. “Get on with it,” they say, “it’s history. Let us concentrate on the future.” These critics discount the link between Israel’s determination to survive and the memory of the Holocaust that has not been forgotten. Discounted because it represents their impatience with Israel’s embrace of its role as the ultimate guarantor of the safety of the Jewish people

The South African Zionist Federation commends the University of Cape Town Senate for firmly rejecting a motion to boycott Israeli academic institutions. We thank the Senate for standing up to this campaign of hate and asserting the importance of academic freedom over narrow political agendas.

SA accepted the presidency of the UN Security Council for October. This offered a unique opportunity for the country to lead the international arena with courage, boldness and moral clarity. Sadly, SA squandered the moment at the UN Security Council open debate on the situation in the Middle East.

The downgrading of the South African embassy in Israel is moving ahead says president Ramaphosa answering questions in parliament. Perhaps the more appropriate question from Munzoor Shaik-Emam would be to ask the president why SA maintains such strong relations with most of the world’s worst human rights abusers and especially gender- based violence, such an important issue in South Africa.

Again, the silence of BDS, Media Review Network, Cosatu and Palestinian Solidarity groups is deafening in the face of the vicious attacks on defenseless immigrants across the country these past few weeks. Oscar van Heerden’s opinion article, “We all owe the Palestinians our support in word and deed”, (Daily Maverick, January 24, 2019). Van Heerden isn’t the first openly anti-Semitic commentator to crucify Israel unabashedly as the nation-state of the Jewish people. However, he provides an astonishing display of academic ignorance of the Middle East, and Palestinian and Israeli society, politics, and security with monstrous disfigurations of fact. By Dan Diker, Rolene Marks and David E. Kaplan.

Israel is one of the smallest nations in the world – yet it has a massive positive impact on global health, food and water security, disaster relief and the economies of developing and developed countries.
Perhaps when Oscar van Heerden next consigns his prejudices to writing, he would confine his remarks to verifiable and unimpeachable sources.
Oh, and For van Heerden’s elucidation, hatred is not taught to Israeli children: but tolerance, love and respect for all.
